July 8 Tadoussac
We awoke to a rather grey, blustery morning. The forecast said it would diminish by noon, and it did, but the morning travel was chilly and damp as we got underway to ride the tide back down river to Tadoussac. The first thing we did was travel around the bend of Baie Eternitee to see the statue from the water.
Even on grey days, the fjord is stunning. You can’t help but be awed by the scenery here. There are several little tour boats taking people out to see the cliffs and the wildlife - Dan called them inflatable greenhouses, because that’s what they look like. There are also open boats that zip people around - like large jetskis with multiple seats - and the people have to wear wind pants and heavy insulated jackets, which are provided. We couldn’t help but think even all dressed up, that riding one of those boats was COLD.
We reached Tadoussac about one pm, and after trying our hand at anchoring in 45 feet of water (the harbor’s bottom is shaped like a bowl with very steep sides) we decided to come to the marina instead for dock space. This town is an old resort town, and very touristy, not unlike Camden. But in Camden, you can’t see whales from shore. Here you can sit on the boardwalk facing the harbor and see a minke whale breach (a first for me, and sorry, I didn’t get a picture) or you can walk to the point and sit on the rocks and watch the whales play.
We got showers and groceries, and will stock up on ice and water before heading out to cross the St. Lawrence to the Southern shore today.
